New publication: Barriers and Facilitators of Programmatic HPV Testing: Lessons Learnt From Two In-Depth Provincial Case Studies Ten Years After the Jujuy Demonstration Project in Argentina

May 13, 2026

Dr. Melisa Paolino, Silvina Arrossi, and Rosa Laudi, together with researchers from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC/WHO) and key stakeholders of provincial cervical cancer prevention programs in Jujuy and Catamarca, have published an article in the special supplement Cancer Prevention, Control, and Outcomes in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Progress and Challenges of the journal Cancer Control.

This study identifies the barriers and facilitators to the long-term implementation of HPV-based screening. The findings reveal that, while significant challenges remain — including interruptions in the national supply of tests and financial constraints — key strengths also emerge: sustained leadership from provincial teams, stability in human resources, and high acceptability of the HPV test.

This new evidence offers valuable lessons for strengthening scale-up strategies and the sustainability of cervical cancer prevention programs across Latin America and other low- and middle-income countries.
